SIU receives 35 complaints in February

The member of the Special Investigation Unit (SIU), Mohammed Khaled Al Hazza yesterday informed that the unit had received 35 complaints in February, four of which had already been investigated. The complaints include allegations of torture and ill-treatment.

As part of the work of the SIU during the same month, the unit heard the statements of 44 witnesses while interrogating 16 accused and suspected members of the public security forces. They referred the two complainants to the unit’s forensic examiner to indicate the injuries sustained, their causes and occurrence.

The unit completed its investigation in one of the cases in which a person claimed that he had been beaten up by the police while being detained during the first half of 2015.

The SIU eventually referred five accused members of the public security forces to the Lower Criminal Court for assault, based on the articles 75/4, 107/1, 339/1 and 2 of the Penal Code. The court hearing session will be held on March 20.
