Farmers Seek More Support
Farmers in Buri have called for increased government support to address mounting challenges facing the agricultural sector, while vendors at Damistan Popular Market have urged authorities to keep the market within the local area if it is relocated.
The concerns were raised during a field visit by MP Dr. Munir Suroor, accompanied by Al Ayam newspaper, to the Seventh Constituency of the Northern Governorate. The tour included meetings with Buri farmers and Damistan Popular Market vendors to discuss key issues affecting their livelihoods.
During the visit to Buri, farmers outlined a range of challenges impacting agricultural production. They pointed to the need for greater financial support, the shrinking of agricultural land, reliance on treated water for irrigation, rising production costs, a shortage of agricultural workers, and limited marketing opportunities for locally grown produce.
They also called for establishing permanent farmers' markets across Bahrain's governorates, exempting Bahraini agricultural products from fees, and implementing additional support measures to strengthen local farming, improve sustainability, and contribute to the Kingdom's food security.
MP Dr. Munir Suroor said all concerns and proposals raised during the visit would be reviewed and categorized before being submitted as parliamentary proposals and official questions to the relevant authorities.
He stressed that the aim is to address the challenges facing the agricultural sector through practical and sustainable solutions.
At Damistan Popular Market, vendors expressed their determination to keep the market within the local community. They said any alternative location should remain close to residents, provide sufficient parking, and offer easy access for shoppers.
The vendors emphasized that these factors are essential to maintaining business activity, protecting their livelihoods, and preserving the market's identity as one of Bahrain's traditional and popular community markets.
