Renewable Energy Projects in Bahrain Reach 500MW

Renewable energy projects with a combined capacity of about 500 megawatts are now either running or being built across Bahrain, with 140MW already feeding power into the grid.

Figures published by the Electricity and Water Authority show that 340 projects have been completed, while 69 are under construction. Together, the 409 schemes have cut carbon emissions by an estimated 115,000 tonnes a year.

The work forms part of Bahrain’s National Renewable Energy Action Plan and National Energy Efficiency Action Plan, which aim to raise the share of clean power in the kingdom’s energy mix and support its carbon neutrality goals.

Homes, shops and factories can produce solar power through net billing and net metering schemes. Users can draw on the electricity they generate and gain credit for surplus power sent into the grid.

The authority said solar panels can cut electricity bills, reduce the use of fossil fuels and give consumers more control over their power use.

All renewable energy services have now been moved online and added to the Benayat platform, allowing applications and project steps to be handled digitally.

Bahrain has also approved more than 90 engineering offices to design solar power systems and over 50 contractors to install them.

The pool of licensed firms is expected to help meet rising demand for solar power while keeping work in line with technical and safety rules.
