Mangroves at Heart of Climate Action

‘Bahrain Mangrove’ project hailed as a national model for sustainability and biodiversity conservation

Bahrain’s Minister of Oil and Environment and Special Envoy for Climate Affairs, Dr Mohammed bin Mubarak bin Daina, has highlighted the Kingdom’s commitment to protecting the environment and preserving biodiversity as a strategic priority aligned with the visions and aspirations of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister.

The minister made the statement ahead of the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, observed annually on July 26, stressing Bahrain’s efforts to strengthen environmental sustainability and safeguard natural resources.

Dr bin Daina praised the role of Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of His Majesty the King, President of the Supreme Council for Women, and Chairperson of the Advisory Council of the National Initiative for Agricultural Development, for supporting national initiatives that promote agricultural and environmental sustainability.

He noted that these efforts have contributed to expanding green spaces and supporting Bahrain’s food security goals.

The minister also highlighted the continued support and follow-up of His Highness Shaikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Personal Representative of His Majesty the King and Chairman of the Supreme Council for Environment, in advancing national environmental initiatives and strengthening efforts to protect natural resources and biodiversity.

Dr bin Daina said the “Bahrain Mangrove” initiative, launched by His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, represents a pioneering national model reflecting Bahrain’s commitment to environmental protection and sustainable management of natural resources.

He explained that the initiative focuses on expanding mangrove cultivation projects and preserving coastal ecosystems, supporting Bahrain’s efforts to address climate change and achieve its environmental objectives.

The minister added that mangrove restoration projects are aligned with Bahrain’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, as they enhance coastal ecosystems’ ability to absorb and store carbon while playing a vital role in protecting biodiversity, supporting marine life sustainability, and maintaining ecological balance.

Dr bin Daina described the “Bahrain Mangrove” initiative as a long-term national investment in the Kingdom’s future, reflecting effective cooperation between government entities, the private sector and the community in adopting innovative and sustainable solutions.

He emphasised that the initiative also helps promote environmental responsibility among members of society and ensures the preservation of natural resources for future generations.

Concluding his remarks, the minister affirmed that Bahrain will continue implementing high-quality environmental and climate initiatives to strengthen its position as an active partner in regional and international efforts aimed at protecting the environment and achieving sustainable development goals.
