US Supreme Court Allows Trump White House Ballroom Project to Proceed

Washington DC: The US Supreme Court on Monday allowed President Donald Trump to continue construction of his White House ballroom, granting him a major victory in a 5-4 decision that lifts a lower court injunction.

The ruling came on procedural grounds, with the conservative-dominated majority determining that the plaintiff, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, likely lacked legal standing to pursue the suit. Consequently, construction can proceed while litigation continues in lower courts without the Supreme Court ruling on the project's ultimate legality.

Chief Justice John Roberts joined the court's three liberal justices in a sharp dissent. Roberts stated the plaintiff clearly had standing and argued that the major White House overhaul was ‘likely unlawful’ due to the absence of express authorization from Congress.

The controversial overhaul kicked off last year with the sudden demolition of the East Wing to build the aboveground ballroom alongside an underground military bunker.

While Trump celebrated the decision, critics noted that media reports contradict his claims of private financing, indicating significant taxpayer funds could push costs up to $600 million.
