AI startup Manus resumes independent operations after Meta deal unwinds

Beijing: Manus, the AI startup, has formally resumed independent operations following the cancellation of its intended acquisition by Meta as Chinese regulators banned the deal. The Singapore-based company announced that its founding team will continue to run the company as it enters a new phase aimed at developing general-purpose AI agents.

Meta announced the acquisition of Manus in December 2025, for a reported price of more than $2 billion. However, in April, Chinese officials ordered the transaction to be terminated due to increased scrutiny of foreign investment and technology transfers involving critical AI technologies.

The switch from Meta also resulted in modifications to user data. Manus has previously stated that some data generated by users after the December 29, 2025 acquisition date would need to be backed up and restored as part of the regulatory process. The corporation stated that the switch briefly affected service for certain users.

Manus stated that it will now focus on developing its AI agents more capable of managing complicated tasks, engaging more directly with the world around them, and becoming more thoroughly integrated into daily work and workflows.
