Man Arrested Second Time in Japan Over Hamster Massacres

TOKYO: Police in Japan have arrested a 36-year-old high school staff member a second time over the slaughter of dozens of hamsters at short-stay hotels in the northern Iwate region.
The suspect was arrested on Monday for the gratuitous killings of roughly 30 hamsters in late March. Authorities confirmed he carried out the acts alongside a 20-year-old woman in violation of animal protection laws.
This latest detention follows a prior arrest in July, when the suspect was held for stomping 20 hamsters to death in February with a 19-year-old female accomplice. Police confiscated the suspect's smartphone, which contained video footage of the killings and text messages planning the acts.
Senior police official Hiroyuki Nasu confirmed that both female accomplices have also been arrested. Messages recovered by investigators showed the suspects asking where they could kill the hamsters and have fun.
Japanese police are continuing their investigation into the school employee to examine whether he committed other similar acts.
