General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Bahrain's Minister of Interior and Chairman of the National Anti-Drug Committee, reaffirmed that combating drug abuse and illicit trafficking is a shared national responsibility requiring coordinated efforts from all sectors of society.
Speaking at a ceremony marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the minister highlighted Bahrain's continued commitment to strengthening international partnerships, regional cooperation and joint action against drug-related crimes. He said these efforts are guided by the directives of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and supported by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister.
General Shaikh Rashid stressed that addressing the growing challenges posed by drug trafficking demands collaboration among security agencies, educational institutions, healthcare providers, media organisations and religious institutions. He noted that evolving smuggling methods require a comprehensive and coordinated national response to safeguard society.
He said Bahrain is continuing to reinforce its anti-drug strategy by enhancing security capabilities, improving operational systems, strengthening coordination between relevant authorities and expanding community partnerships to prevent drug abuse and trafficking.
According to the minister, authorities recorded 2,006 drug-related cases in 2025, while 475 cases were registered during the first quarter of 2026. He underscored that public awareness remains a key pillar of the country's efforts to protect future generations from the dangers of drugs.
The event featured the screening of a documentary highlighting Bahrain's anti-drug initiatives and included the recognition of distinguished officers, non-commissioned officers and supporting organisations for their contributions to combating drug-related crimes.
During the ceremony, the ministry also showcased the Stevie Award received by the "Ta'afi" (Recovery) programme, implemented by the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science to support individuals recovering from drug addiction.
The minister concluded the event by touring an exhibition displaying artworks created by students who won the anti-drug awareness competition organised jointly by the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Education.
