Manhunt to nab chain-snatcher

A manhunt has been launched for an Asian chain-snatcher in Manama.

The accused snatched a golden necklace from a woman’s neck in Ras Rumman on Saturday and fled with it. The “coward” act, as described by the victim, took place at the woman's doorstep and in the presence of her two-year-old child.

Her husband James Mathew expained to DT News that the whole thing happened in a matter of seconds.

The woman was standing in front of their residence in Ras Rumman, while the husband went to a nearby restaurant for takeaway.

“On Saturday evening, after we returned from church at around 8pm, I went to buy some food from the restaurant next door, while my wife and child waited for me in front of the building we live in. Suddenly I heard my wife scream and I ran towards her,” Mr Mathew said.

James tried to chase the thief through the alleys of Ras Rumman but with no luck.

Mr Mathew described the thief as a fair-skinned Asian man, probably a Filipino or Nepali, aged between 25-30 years and with a good physique.

Meanwhile the woman explained to DT News that the thief "came out from a nearby building and walked steadily towards her, snatched the necklace and ran-off."

“There were many people on the road at the time when the incident happened. No one took the initiative to stop the man, despite our yelling," said Mrs Mathew.

"They only approached us after he fled the scene and claimed he was a Nepalese man, but no one knew who he was.”

Mr Mathew said the thief ran towards a nearby mosque which had CCTV cameras.

“I have reported the case to the Gudaibiya Police Station and informed them about the cameras. I really hope that this could assist them in identifying and arresting him,” he added.
