A public events hall for residents of the Southern Governorate has been approved by Parliament’s Services Committee, after MPs were told families in the area lacked a low-cost venue for weddings and other gatherings.

The proposal, lodged by MPs Dr Ali Al Nuaimi, Ali Saqer and Mohammed Salman Al Ahmed, asks the government to build the hall through the Ministry of Social Development, the Ministry of Works and the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture.

The hall would be used for weddings and other social events by residents of the constituency, which the proposal says has seen continued population growth without a matching supply of public halls.

MPs behind the plan said private hall rents had risen, leaving families with heavier costs when arranging weddings and other occasions. A public venue, they argued, would give residents a fitting place nearby and ease the strain on household budgets.

The Ministry of Social Development told the committee that it had checked its records of government property and found no vacant land owned by the ministry in the seventh constituency or in nearby areas.
