Shura Council Chairman Ali bin Saleh Al Saleh honoured local newspaper and media representatives on Sunday, saying Bahrain’s press had a clear role in explaining parliamentary work and keeping the public close to lawmaking.
The ceremony marked Bahraini Press Day and World Press Freedom Day, and was attended by First Deputy Chairman Jamal Fakhro, Second Deputy Chairwoman Dr Jehad Al Fadhel and Council Secretary-General Karima Al Abbasi.
Mr Al Saleh thanked journalists and media staff for covering Shura Council sittings and committee meetings, saying their reports helped readers follow the work of the Shura Council and Parliament as laws are studied, debated and passed.
He said the press had helped strengthen Bahrain’s democratic gains, deepen belonging and uphold freedom of opinion and expression under the care of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.
The King’s reform project, he said, had changed the field of media and journalism in Bahrain, widening the role carried by the local press since its beginnings nearly 87 years ago.
Mr Al Saleh also praised newspapers and media outlets for following Bahrain’s development work and government programmes, and referred to the support given by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to the local press and its professional growth.
He described the press as an important partner to the legislature, saying its work helped the public understand what both chambers do in shaping Bahrain’s laws.
Mr Al Saleh added that local media had made use of modern tools to serve unity and public cohesion, and said the Shura Council valued the work of journalists and media bodies across the kingdom.
