Rabat : The U.S. Army has announced the recovery of the body of First Lieutenant Kendrick Lamont Key Jr., 27, who went missing during the ‘African Lion’ training exercise in Morocco. Key, an air defense artillery officer from Richmond, Virginia, was found by a Moroccan military search team on Saturday morning along the shoreline of Cap Draa.

The incident occurred on May 2, when a group of soldiers went on a sunset hike. A preliminary report suggests one soldier fell from a cliff into the ocean, and a second soldier jumped in to attempt a rescue before being hit by a wave.

While the incident took place during the annual military exercise, defense officials believe it was an accident unrelated to the training maneuvers.

The search for the second missing soldier, who has not yet been identified, remains ongoing. More than 1,000 U.S. and Moroccan personnel have been involved in the joint ground, naval, and aerial search operations. Plans are currently underway to repatriate Lieutenant Key’s remains to the United States.
