Shura Council approved a draft law allowing the unemployment insurance fund to cover April 2026 salaries for an estimated 106,000 Bahraini workers, with costs projected between BD80 million and BD100 million.
The legislation, linked to Decree No. 24 of 2026, introduces a one-time provision to the existing unemployment insurance framework, enabling salary payments for insured workers up to their registered wage level.
Officials highlighted that the unemployment insurance fund currently holds around BD600 million. It has previously been used for major national programmes, including retirement support schemes, Covid-19 relief, and employment initiatives, with total spending of about BD741 million over the past seven years.
The Ministry of Labour said the fund remains financially stable and is closely monitored through regular actuarial assessments.
