Bahrain to host opening round of 2027 F1 season as well as pre-season testing

Formula 1 and the FIA today announced the 2027 Formula 1 calendar, with Bahrain confirmed as the season opener and the host for pre-season testing. The full 2027 calendar has been announced following its approval by the World Motorsport Council. 

The first race of the 2027 season will take place at Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) between 12 and 14 March and will be the first opportunity for fans to see the 2027 cars in competitive action. The 2027 race will be the seventh time in Bahrain’s history to host the season opener. Bahrain was also confirmed as the venue for pre-season testing, scheduled for 24 to 27 February. 

It was also announced that Bahrain will host a Sprint Race for the first time in its history. The addition of the Sprint Race will add to the excitement for fans, with competitive racing action across all three days of the racing weekend. 

Shaikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa, Chief Executive of Bahrain International Circuit, said: 

“It’s a great honour for us to be hosting both pre-season testing and the season opening race in 2027, which will incorporate our first-ever Sprint Race weekend. As we plan the final stages of this year’s Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, we also look ahead to the return of F1 to BIC, the Home of Motorsport in the Middle East. It will be a celebratory homecoming and a weekend of incredible entertainment on and off the track, welcoming our expectant fans from Bahrain and across the world. 

“Next year will mark the second season under the current regulations, which have already delivered compelling racing so far this year. I would therefore encourage fans to register their interest for tickets and join us for what will be a grand celebration of motorsport.” 

The announcement of next year’s calendar confirmed a 24-race season and also includes the return of Portugal on 20 June and Türkiye on 3 October. After testing and the season opener in Bahrain, F1 will head to Saudi Arabia the following weekend. Following races in Australia, Japan, China, Miami and Canada, Monaco will mark the start of the European season on 6 June. Following further races across Asia and the Americas, the season will conclude on 12 December in Abu Dhabi.
