The Shura Council has unanimously approved a comprehensive new law regulating the legal profession, replacing a framework that has been in place for more than four decades.

The 68-article legislation, already passed by Parliament, introduces updated rules on lawyer registration, training, disciplinary procedures, legal fees, legal aid, and client rights.

It also sets new conditions for practice, including allowing non-Bahraini lawyers to appear in limited cases alongside licensed Bahraini lawyers, while tightening requirements for returning practitioners.

The law allows non-Bahraini lawyers to operate only in specific specialised courts and only alongside Bahraini lawyers admitted to higher courts, while excluding criminal, labour, tenancy, sharia, and personal status cases.

Several amendments were also approved during review, including removing mandatory insurance requirements, reducing administrative fines, and limiting ministerial powers in disciplinary suspensions.
