Nayef Tawfeeq Ismaeel Mahmood Alalawi, a candidate for the Board of Directors of the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), has outlined an ambitious vision to modernise the historic Muharraq Market through digital transformation, following a field visit to the site.

During the visit, Alalawi met with prominent businessman Fouad Shuwaiter to discuss strategies for enhancing the market’s future amid rapid technological advancements in the commercial sector, both locally and globally.

Alalawi emphasised the need to strike a balance between preserving heritage and embracing innovation, noting that supporting Muharraq’s merchants requires a comprehensive plan centred on digital adoption.

Tools

He stressed that equipping Bahraini traders with modern technological tools is no longer optional, but essential to maintaining competitiveness and attracting today’s consumers.

Among the key proposals presented was the development of an integrated digital payment system, encouraging the widespread use of electronic payment solutions and digital wallets across all shops in the market.

The move aims to streamline transactions and enhance convenience for both residents and tourists.

Alalawi also proposed the launch of a “Digital Muharraq” platform — an online marketplace that would enable vendors to showcase and sell their products beyond the physical boundaries of the historic souq, opening new commercial opportunities.
