Bahrain seeks parliamentary backing for maritime security proposal

A Bahrain Parliamentary Division delegation held talks with parliamentary groups from France, Ukraine and the IPU’s Twelve Plus Group to coordinate support for the Kingdom’s proposal on maritime security and international straits.

The meetings were held on the sidelines of the 153rd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), taking place in Arusha, Tanzania, from October 5 to 9.

The delegation, led by Jamal Mohammed Fakhro, First Deputy Chairman of the Shura Council, met with Laurent Wehrli, Chair of the IPU’s Twelve Plus Group.

The discussions focused on strengthening parliamentary cooperation and exchanging expertise, while coordinating positions on issues related to security, stability and sustainable development.

The Bahrain delegation presented its proposed emergency item on maritime security and international straits, highlighting the importance of freedom of navigation and the security of international waterways to global peace, trade and economic stability.

Hala Ramzy Fayez, Shura Council member and Deputy Head of the Parliamentary Division delegation, separately met with the parliamentary delegation of France, led by Michelle Gréaume, and the Ukrainian parliamentary delegation, led by Oleksandr Korniyenko.

The meetings addressed bilateral parliamentary cooperation, issues of common interest and efforts to secure support for Bahrain’s proposed emergency item at the IPU General Assembly.
