The Court of Cassation has rejected appeals filed by a number of individuals convicted in separate cases involving allegations of supporting and promoting Iranian attacks against Bahrain, photographing restricted locations, obtaining and disseminating prohibited vital data, and spreading false news and rumours, according to the Public Prosecution.

The Head of the Terrorist Crimes Prosecution said the cases stemmed from social media posts published by the convicted individuals.

The Public Prosecution said it had launched investigations after receiving reports from the Directorate of Anti-Cybercrime regarding images, videos and comments posted on the individuals’ social media accounts.

According to the Public Prosecution, the content included support for Iranian attacks targeting Bahrain, photographs of locations where photography is prohibited, and false or misleading news and rumours that could harm public security, cause panic and weaken public morale.

Following the investigations and evidence presented in the cases, the Public Prosecution referred the defendants to trial.

The High Criminal Court considered the cases over several hearings, during which the defendants were afforded the legally prescribed guarantees, and convicted them, sentencing them to prison terms ranging from five to 10 years, in addition to fines and the confiscation of seized items.

The Court of Appeal upheld the sentences.

The defendants subsequently appealed before the Court of Cassation, which, at its session held today, accepted the appeals in form but rejected them on the merits, leaving the convictions in place.
