Rain fell steadily across parts of Bahrain, yet the familiar spirit of Gergaoon quietly found its way into neighbourhood streets, carried by children’s laughter and the soft rhythm of raindrops.

Despite the exceptional circumstances facing the country and the precautionary measures in place, many families chose to mark the cherished Ramadan tradition modestly and carefully. Rather than the usual crowded gatherings, celebrations unfolded gently within neighbourhoods, reflecting both caution and the determination to keep the tradition alive.

Children stepped out in their colourful traditional outfits, clutching bright Gergaoon bags while singing the well-known chants of the occasion. The rain did little to dampen their excitement. In several areas, families adapted the celebration creatively, choosing to participate from inside their cars while driving slowly through neighbourhood streets.

From open car windows, parents handed out sweets and nuts to eager children waiting by the roadside. This approach helped avoid large gatherings while allowing the younger generation to experience the joy of the tradition. The result was a series of spontaneous moments where the sound of rain blended with children’s laughter.

This year’s celebrations were noticeably quieter and simpler than in previous years. Large scale Gergaoon events planned for shopping malls, parks and public gardens were cancelled due to the current circumstances.

Yet even in its smaller form, the heart of Gergaoon remained present. The evening offered a reminder that Bahrain’s traditions do not disappear in difficult moments. Instead, they adapt, finding new ways to continue while reflecting the community’s sense of responsibility and care for one another.
