Bahrain Customs on the Frontline of Security

Lieutenant General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Minister of Interior, has affirmed that Customs Affairs play a vital role in protecting society and strengthening national security, as Bahrain joins the international community in celebrating World Customs Day, marked annually on January 26.

In a statement issued on the occasion, the Interior Minister said this year’s theme, “Customs Protects Society through Commitment and Responsibility,” highlights the crucial role of customs authorities worldwide in safeguarding communities and ensuring security. He noted that Customs Affairs in the Kingdom of Bahrain represent one of the key pillars of the Ministry of Interior’s security strategy, particularly through the use of advanced technologies to enhance customs capabilities.

He added that these efforts align with the objectives of the comprehensive national development process led by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and closely followed by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister.

The Minister explained that Customs Affairs operate around the clock to enhance border security and protect society by detecting smuggling attempts and preventing the entry of prohibited materials. These efforts are carried out while facilitating trade and travel, expanding customs oversight, and improving the business and investment environment through faster procedures, facilitation programs, and the development of electronic systems. Such measures, he said, help strengthen investor confidence and support the national economy.

He stressed that effective customs oversight reflects a comprehensive approach to public safety, based on coordination between security agencies and customs authorities, constant vigilance, strict enforcement of laws and regulations, and strategic planning founded on scientific and systematic principles.

Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah noted that Customs Affairs operate under a comprehensive strategic plan aimed at enhancing community safety and supporting the national economy by maintaining strict control over customs outlets and countering all smuggling attempts that threaten public health and safety. He added that customs authorities work through an integrated system with regulatory and security agencies to inspect and seize prohibited and restricted items.

The Minister also highlighted ongoing cooperation and information exchange with customs authorities in friendly countries, which has significantly enhanced Bahrain’s ability to confront smuggling attempts efficiently. He emphasized that today’s complex challenges — including organized crime, money laundering, drug trafficking, and the smuggling of prohibited substances — require teamwork, institutional integration, and strengthened cooperation at national, regional, and international levels.

On the occasion of World Customs Day, the Interior Minister praised the efforts of the President of Customs Affairs and his role in developing customs services and implementing a distinguished customs strategy. He expressed his appreciation to all Customs Affairs personnel for their professionalism, vigilance, advanced security awareness, and high-level performance, wishing them continued excellence and leadership.
