In a significant cultural collaboration, esteemed Malayalam director Ravindran Elias Patasseril has announced the launch of his latest creative project, "Scent of the Absent," a web series set to be filmed in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Produced by RavnX Cineverse in coordination with the Kochi Centre for Film Promotion and the Kochi Metro Short Film Festival, the series stars Bahraini novelist and architect Hanan Al Rahma. This ambitious project serves as a bridge between Indian cinematic expertise and Arab storytelling, rooted in an academic partnership with Bahrain Polytechnic that dates back to 2018.
By involving university students as active production trainees, Patasseril is transforming the filming process into a practical extension of his "visual literacy" and "script to screen" workshops.
The series itself is composed of six concise episodes, each running between eight and ten minutes, designed to pioneer a movement known as "Arab poetic immersion cinema."
Departing from the noise of traditional, dialogue-heavy productions, "Scent of the Absent" focuses on the philosophical use of silence, light, and visual space to evoke deep sensory experiences. This artistic venture not only highlights Bahrain as a hub for contemporary cultural expression but also reinforces the long-standing historical ties between India and the Kingdom. The initiative continues a legacy of cross-cultural support previously recognized by the Indian Embassy in Bahrain, signaling a new chapter in international poetic cinema.
