A massive rescue operation is currently underway in Cebu City after a ‘four-story high’ mountain of rubbish collapsed at a waste segregation facility in Barangay Binaliw, Philippines, burying several workers and crushing office buildings. The disaster, which occurred on Thursday, has resulted in at least one confirmed death, a female worker who succumbed to her injuries while being transported to the hospital, and has left seven others injured.

Significant uncertainty remains regarding the total number of victims; while regional police initially reported 27 people missing, Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival has stated that as many as 38 individuals may still be trapped beneath the debris. Aerial footage of the site reveals that several structures housing administrative, HR, and maintenance staff for the private firm operating the landfill were completely flattened under the weight of the waste.

The cause of the collapse remains a mystery, as local officials noted there was no rainfall at the time of the incident to trigger a slide. The facility, operated by Prime Integrated Waste Solutions, reportedly processes 1,000 tons of municipal waste daily and employs 110 people. Rescue efforts continued through the night despite communication difficulties caused by a lack of signal at the site, with dozens of emergency responders scrambling to find survivors. Mayor Archival has called for an emergency meeting to address accountability and safety protocols as the city government promises compassionate assistance to the affected families.
