Bahrain Human Rights Watch Condemns Attempted ATM Attack

The Bahrain Human Rights Watch Society condemned what it described as a cowardly terrorist act targeting an ATM in Al Naeem, warning that it posed a direct threat to the safety of citizens and residents and amounted to a serious attack on civil peace and public property.

In a statement issued yesterday, the society said such actions have no connection to human rights principles or freedom of opinion and expression. It said the incident should be treated as a criminal act punishable by law, adding that it represents a danger to society as a whole.

The society also praised the Ministry of Interior and security services for arresting the suspects within a short time, saying the action strengthens the rule of law and reinforces the public sense of safety. It further expressed support for the kingdom to take all legal measures against anyone proven to be involved in terrorist or incitement related acts that undermine national security and stability.

The Ministry of Interior said the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science arrested two men, aged 19 and 23, over an arson attempt and an attempted explosion targeting an ATM belonging to a national bank in Al Naim in the Capital Governorate. The ministry said the incident occurred two days ago.

According to the ministry, the younger suspect entered the location, poured a flammable substance and placed a gas cylinder, while the second suspect assisted by inspecting the site before the attempt and buying equipment used in the crime. It said the area was secured and specialist teams carried out forensic examinations and collected material evidence before investigators identified the suspects and moved to arrest them.

The ministry also alleged the operation was carried out through an agreed division of roles following preparation and planning. It said the younger suspect filmed the incident after it was carried out and sent the video to an incitement account.

Authorities said legal procedures have been taken and the two suspects have been referred to the Public Prosecution, while investigations remain ongoing.
