Parliament will on Tuesday debate a proposal to keep police patrols on King Hamad Highway round the clock, following a rise in deadly crashes, illegal street racing and residents’ complaints.
The Foreign Affairs, Defence and National Security Committee backed the motion, tabled by MPs Lulwa Al Rumaihi, Munir Surour and Bader Al Tamimi, urging the government to increase traffic and security patrols along the route day and night.
MP Lulwa Al Rumaihi said the road has become dangerous due to reckless drive r s and unlawful racing, adding that cameras alone no longer deter offenders. Continuous patrols, she said, would curb accidents, catch violators and safeguard lives and property.
Interior Ministry officials told the committee that the General Directorate of Traffic already monitors the highway and enforces lane discipline for lorries, while new routes fall under the Works Ministry.
The committee unanimously recommended Parliament approve the motion.
