New Rules Launched to Combat SMS Scams in Bahrain
The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) of Bahrain, in partnership with the Kingdom’s mobile operators, has launched a set of comprehensive guidelines to combat fraudulent SMS messages.
The move comes after the TRA and mobile operators formed a strategic working group to tackle growing online safety threats. Fraudulent SMS scams, which target unsuspecting consumers, were identified as a significant risk, prompting urgent action to safeguard users across the Kingdom.
The newly published guidelines outline clear technical measures for mobile operators to detect, block, and reduce fraudulent messages. They also include steps for raising public awareness, reporting scams, and ensuring compliance with Bahrain’s regulatory and data protection laws.
Sheikh Abdulla Bin Humood Al Khalifa, Director of Consumer and Communications at TRA, said,
"This collaboration with mobile operators highlights our shared commitment to protecting consumers. By working together, we are enabling the public to use telecom services with greater confidence and security. These guidelines are a vital step in protecting individuals from SMS fraud while promoting online safety awareness."
Philip Marnick, TRA’s General Director, added,
"These guidelines show what can be achieved when regulators and industry partners join forces. Our focus is on safeguarding the people of Bahrain from scams and ensuring their interests are fully protected. This initiative strengthens trust in our telecom networks and demonstrates our responsibility to consumers."
TRA emphasized that this initiative reflects a united effort to address real risks faced by mobile users, reinforcing Bahrain’s position as a regional leader in consumer protection and digital trust.
