Bahrain Joins UN Forum in Vienna to Strengthen Global Drug Policy Cooperation
Bahrain reaffirmed its commitment to international efforts against drug abuse and trafficking, as Major General Abdulaziz Mayouf Al-Rumaihi, Director-General of the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Evidence, took part in the UN Committee on Narcotic Drugs meetings held in Vienna from September 30 to October 2.
The high-level sessions brought together officials and experts from around the world to assess the progress of global drug policies, in line with the 2019 Ministerial Declaration. Discussions centered on reinforcing public health responses to drug use, highlighting prevention as a cornerstone strategy, and expanding addiction treatment and healthcare services. Delegates also addressed pressing concerns such as the rise in drug-related deaths, the spread of infectious diseases linked to substance abuse, and the wider health consequences of narcotics.
On the sidelines, Major General Al-Rumaihi participated in a coordination meeting organized by the Permanent Mission of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to the United Nations in Vienna. The gathering provided a platform for Gulf states to exchange views, strengthen regional collaboration, and align strategies in combating drug abuse through public health initiatives and cross-border cooperation.
The meetings underscored a growing international recognition: the fight against drugs is no longer just a matter of law enforcement, but also of public health, prevention, and global solidarity.
