A 17-year-old has been remanded in custody after admitting she misused a public social media account to post insults about a man and to lure a person with disabilities before sharing offensive messages and images of him, the Public Prosecution said.

The case reached prosecutors via a report from the Cybercrime Directorate at the General Directorate of Anti-Corruption, Economic and Electronic Security at the Interior Ministry.

Investigators questioned the teenager, who said she posted to gain fame and grow her follower count.

Inquiries Prosecutors ordered that she be held pending further inquiries and directed specialists to extract data from her mobile phone.

The investigation is ongoing. In a statement, the Public Prosecution urged parents to keep watch over their children’s online interactions and check what they share.

It warned that legal action will be taken against breaches of online publishing rules, especially when such conduct targets groups afforded higher legal protection, such as persons with disabilities.
