Paan smuggling haul of 230 kilogrammes earns a Gulf national six months’ jail and deportation, the court ruled yesterday.
Customs Affairs said he was stopped at the land border with about 230 kilogrammes of the banned substance, packed into 29 parcels and stowed in the boot of his car.
The haul and the vehicle were impounded, and the case was sent to the Public Prosecution.
Inquiry
The Tax Evasion Crimes Unit at the Financial Crimes and Money Laundering Prosecution opened an inquiry, took statements from Customs staff, examined the seized items, sent samples for testing and reviewed related papers.
The evidence supported the charge, after which the defendant was remanded and referred to the Minor Criminal Court.
The court ordered the confiscation of the goods and his permanent deportation after he serves the sentence. ‘Paan’, a tobacco substitute, is banned in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
