Al-Darazi Elected President of Bahrain’s National Human Rights Institution

The Board of Commissioners of Bahrain’s National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) held its first procedural meeting today, Sunday, under the chairmanship of Dr. Mal Allah Al-Hammadi, the eldest member of the board. The meeting was held in accordance with the provisions of Law No. 26 of 2014 establishing the institution, as amended by Decree-Law No. 20 of 2016.

At the start of the meeting, Dr. Al-Hammadi congratulated the board members on receiving the royal honor from His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, who appointed them as members of the NIHR Board of Commissioners under Royal Order No. 26 of 2025.

The board then reviewed the provisions of the founding law and its amendments, along with the internal regulations governing the work of the commissioners.

Following procedural formalities, elections were held for the positions of President and Vice President of the board. Engineer Ali Ahmed Al-Darazi was elected President, while Dr. Mal Allah Al-Hammadi was elected Vice President.

On this occasion, President Al-Darazi expressed, on behalf of himself and all board members, his sincere gratitude to His Majesty the King for the royal trust. He emphasized the board’s commitment to carrying out its duties impartially and independently, promoting and protecting human rights in Bahrain in line with national and international standards.

Al-Darazi also expressed his appreciation for the confidence placed in him by the board members, stressing his pride in working with a dedicated team focused on human rights and cooperating with relevant authorities. He also thanked the outgoing board members for their dedicated efforts, which contributed positively to the institution’s mission.

During the meeting, members of the permanent specialized committees were also selected and their heads elected. In addition, the Child Rights Commissioner was appointed. The results are as follows:

  • Committee on Rights and Public Freedoms: Chaired by Advisor Mohammed Fazeia, with members Dr. Maha Al-Shihab and Mr. Daniel Haroun.
  • Committee on Visits to Detention Centers and Facilities: Chaired by Dr. Mal Allah Jaafar Al-Hammadi, with members Mr. Abdullah Khalifa Al-Dawadi and Mona George Kouro.
  • Committee on Complaints, Monitoring, and Follow-up: Chaired by Ms. Rawda Al-Aradi, with members Dr. Hamad Ibrahim Al-Abdullah, Dr. Shaimaa Mohammed Abdullah, and Ms. Sheikha Hamdi Al-Sheiba.
  • Child Rights Commissioner: Dr. Maha Al-Shihab.
