Interior Minister General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa welcomed Supreme Council of Health Chairman Lt. General Dr. Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Khalifa and Health Minister Dr. Jaleela bint Sayed Jawad Hasan to celebrate the achievement. He extended heartfelt congratulations to both governorates, praising the dedication of their teams in meeting the international health standards.

“This recognition reflects Bahrain’s commitment to sustainable development and improving the quality of life for citizens and residents,” the Minister said. He credited the success to the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the support of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister.

Shaikh Rashid emphasized that the initiative strengthens community partnerships and public health efforts. He also encouraged the Southern Governorate to continue working toward its own WHO certification, with the ultimate goal of declaring all of Bahrain’s governorates “healthy.”

The Northern Governorate met WHO criteria in November 2024, while Muharraq completed its evaluation in February 2025. The Healthy Cities Program focuses on improving health, environment, and social well-being through community involvement and cooperation between local authorities and the Ministry of Health.

The program includes 80 standards covering areas like community engagement, water safety, healthy food, health education, emergency preparedness, and inter-sector partnerships.

The meeting was also attended by Interior Ministry Community Affairs Advisor Ali Abdulhussein Al Asfoor and WHO Eastern Mediterranean Regional Director Dr. Hanan Hassan Balkhy, who praised Bahrain’s efforts to create healthier living environments for its people.
