Netanyahu to Make 24-Hour New York Trip for UN Speech Amid Arrest Row

New York: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to make a brief trip to New York this month to address the UN General Assembly, despite calls from Mayor Zohran Mamdani for his arrest over the Gaza war.
Israel’s UN ambassador Danny Danon said Netanyahu would travel for about 24 hours and stressed that he would attend the annual gathering of world leaders on September 24. Danon accused Mamdani of using the issue for political purposes.
Mamdani had called Netanyahu a “war criminal” and urged his arrest, citing an International Criminal Court arrest warrant issued in 2024. He later acknowledged that New York City does not have the legal authority to arrest the Israeli prime minister.
The planned visit is expected to draw protests and further controversy over Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. Danon said Netanyahu remained committed to delivering his UN address despite the opposition.
