Israel to Shut British Consulate in East Jerusalem Amid Settlement Trade Row

Jerusalem: Israel has announced preparations to close the British consulate in East Jerusalem after the United Kingdom, France, and Canada banned imports from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. The measures are intended to put pressure on Israel to limit settlement construction while still supporting the establishment of a future Palestinian state.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar described the British decision as "blatant interference" and stated that the closure was coordinated with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Israel also announced that Britain would no longer participate in a US-led coordination mission for Gaza and imposed entry bans on several British nationals, including former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

The British consulate in East Jerusalem is the UK's diplomatic mission in the Palestinian territories, although its embassy in Israel remains in Tel Aviv. The closure so signals a dramatic escalation in the diplomatic crisis, but it does not imply that Britain is terminating diplomatic relations with Israel.

The UK stated that the new limitations are meant to resist settlement development and what Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband described as the ‘ethnic cleansing’ of Palestinians in regions of the West Bank. France and Canada have similarly used settlement growth and violence as justifications for their policies.

Although the direct economic impact is expected to be limited because settlement exports account for a small portion of Israel's total trade, the move is politically significant, reflecting growing disagreements between Israel and some of its traditional Western allies over the West Bank and the future of the two-state solution.
