UN Envoy, ‘Quintet’ Push Sudan Peace Talks in Khartoum

Khartoum: Pekka Haavisto, the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy for Sudan, has joined members from the African Union, IGAD, Arab League, and the European Union in Khartoum for talks aimed at restarting an inclusive political process to end Sudan's crisis.

The three-day 'good offices' mission, which runs from September 8 to 10, conducts direct meetings with Sudanese governmental and civilian stakeholders. The committee is reviewing the country's political and security condition and debating practical ways to advance peace efforts.

Haavisto also met with senior Sudanese officials and civil society members to discuss de-escalation, civilian protection, and the release or exchange of detainees. He emphasised the importance of a negotiated settlement in attaining a complete ceasefire and long-term peace.

Sudan has been gripped by war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces since April 2023, creating a devastating humanitarian crisis and displacing millions.

The Quintet aims to create an inclusive political path that could eventually lead to a democratic, civilian-led administration in Sudan.
