Bahrain has secured a historic diplomatic breakthrough by winning the chairmanship of the Paris Union Assembly, one of the oldest treaty bodies within the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
Historic first
This marks the first time the Kingdom has assumed the presidency of a WIPO assembly. Maryam Abdulaziz AlDoseri, Bahrain’s Commercial Attaché at the Permanent Mission in Geneva, was elected as Chair of the Paris Union Assembly, which oversees the implementation of the 1883 Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property.
Global recognition
The Paris Convention forms the backbone of international standards related to patents, trademarks, and industrial designs. Bahrain’s election signals growing recognition of its active engagement in multilateral intellectual property policymaking and its leadership in promoting fair, transparent, and innovative global trade rules.
Strategic positioning
Officials say the appointment strengthens Bahrain’s global presence in intellectual property governance and aligns with its national priorities to support innovation, protect IP rights, and advance industrial cooperation through international platforms.
The chairmanship is expected to enhance Bahrain’s visibility in shaping global IP standards and deepen its influence in future treaty negotiations.
