The Shura Council’s Foreign Affairs, Defense, and National Security Committee has described the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) as reaching a “historic milestone” in its journey of unity and integration, citing global challenges as a call to strengthen regional cohesion.

Marking the 44th anniversary of the Council’s establishment, the committee praised the foundational vision of the late founding rulers, whose legacy continues to guide the region’s cooperation in politics, economy, security, and society. The Council was formed on May 25, 1981.

Strategic Framework
H.E. Dr. Ali Al-Rumaihi, Chairman of the Committee, noted that the GCC is one of the few regional blocs in the world that has achieved a common market and a customs union among all its member states.

The committee, chaired by His Excellency Dr. Ali bin Mohammed Al-Rumaihi, stressed that economic and security integration is no longer optional but a strategic necessity to safeguard sovereignty, sustain prosperity, and meet the evolving aspirations of Gulf citizens.

It credited the leadership of Their Majesties and Highnesses of the GCC member states for maintaining unity and enabling the bloc to emerge as a trusted regional force amid shifting international dynamics.

Achievements Highlighted
The committee pointed to tangible progress made in joint defence coordination, economic cooperation, foreign diplomacy, and parliamentary initiatives as proof of the Council’s effectiveness over the past four decades.

It also noted the GCC’s key role in ensuring regional security and responding collectively to global developments.

Bahrain’s Commitment
Reaffirming the Kingdom’s position, the committee stated that Bahrain’s Shura Council remains committed to any initiative that advances Gulf unity, expands joint parliamentary action, and strengthens the shared vision that underpins the Council’s strategic mission.

The statement comes as GCC countries look to deepen regional integration in response to emerging global and economic realignments.
