Traders give Little India in Bahrain a warm welcome
The Little India in Bahrain project that was launched in the old market in Manama on Saturday received a warm welcome, especially from the traders at the market, who described it as a “revival” of the market.
In a press statement issued yesterday, Manama Traditional Market Committee confirmed the launch of the project would regenerate the commercial and touristic movement in the area.
The committee called for implementing similar initiatives and cultural projects in the future to attract natives and tourists.
The committee’s Vice-Chairman and trader Mahmood Al Namliti welcomed the launch of the project. He said inaugurating the project in a small space within the ancient market proves Bahrain’s capability of absorbing such promotional programmes.
Al Namliti thanked the organisers of the project, Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA), headed by its president Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa.
He lauded the efforts of BACA to revive the old market and implement urban and cultural events there, with an aim to increase the footfall.
“The old market was ignored during the past few years, as shoppers prefer going to malls and indoor markets. But such projects would attract them to the old market and introduce them to the genuine traditions of Bahrain,” Al Namliti commented.
He added the Little India in Bahrain project highlights the historic Bahraini-Indo relations and the unique connections between both civilisations.
