New Delhi: Three Indian sailors have been confirmed dead after a commercial tanker collided with the coast of Oman, Indian Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced on Thursday. The vessel, the Palau-flagged MT Settebello, was carrying 24 Indian crew members when it was attacked in the Gulf of Oman.
The three sailors were first reported missing after the incident. The crew recovered following search and rescue operations by Omani authorities, and 21 more Indian sailors were safely rescued.
India strongly condemned the attack and filed a formal complaint to the United States. The Ministry of External Affairs expressed serious concerns about attacks on commercial vessels in the region and called for greater safety for seafarers operating in conflict-prone waterways.
According to maritime officials and US military statements, the tanker was struck while traversing the Gulf of Oman under heightened tensions caused by the continuing regional conflict. Investigations into the facts behind the tragedy are ongoing.
