Geneva: According to the UN refugee agency UNHCR's most recent global trends report, more than one out of every 70 people on the world has been forced to flee their homes due to persecution, war, abuse, or human rights violations.

According to the CIA, 117.8 million people worldwide suffered from compelled migration by the end of 2025, including refugees, asylum seekers, and those displaced within their own countries. While the aggregate number reduced marginally from the previous year, it remains one of the highest levels ever reported.

UNHCR reports that there are 9 million asylum seekers awaiting verdicts on their claims, 41.6 million refugees globally, and 68.7 million internally displaced people who remained inside their nation's borders.

As a result of more people returning to countries like Sudan, Syria, and Afghanistan, the number of displaced people decreased for the first time in more than a decade, according to the report. However, many of those returns occurred under challenging conditions, including limited access to services and ongoing security problems.

UNHCR officials stressed that although a minor decline in overall numbers, there is still a severe global displacement issue, with seven out of ten refugees coming from only six countries and many of them spending years in exile without sustainable solutions. The agency recommended more worldwide efforts to promote peace, aid host countries, and give refugees the chance to start over through work, education, and sustainable solutions.
