Bordeaux, France: French authorities have detained a 15-year-old youth suspected of starting a deadly forest fire near Bordeaux airport that killed two firefighters.

The teenager was formally placed under investigation and held in juvenile detention after the victims became trapped in their truck while battling the July 21 blaze.

The tragedy, alongside another volunteer firefighter's death in southeast France, sparked intense anger among firefighter unions over severe resource shortages.

Following unsatisfactory talks with Interior Minister Laurent Nunez on Thursday, representatives from nine unions rejected his commitments and threatened industrial action in September.

Meanwhile, firefighters continue battling forest blazes across the country as much of France remains in the grip of a severe new heatwave.
