Indian Court Jails Former Top Editor 10 Years For Rape

NEW DELHI: The Bombay High Court has sentenced former Tehelka magazine editor Tarun Tejpal to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a junior colleague, setting aside his 2021 trial court acquittal.
The ruling follows an appeal by the Goa government after a lower court previously cleared Tejpal of rape, sexual harassment, and wrongful restraint charges stemming from a November 2013 incident inside a hotel elevator.
In addition to the decade-long prison term, the court ordered the 63-year-old journalist to pay a $5,250 fine and granted him two weeks to surrender to authorities.
Tejpal rejected the ruling, labeling the prosecution a political vendetta and announcing plans to challenge the conviction in the Supreme Court.
The high-profile case emerged amid intense national scrutiny of sexual violence following the 2012 Delhi gang rape, severely damaging the reputation and influence of the investigative publication.
