Seoul Court Orders North Korea to Pay $32.5 Million in Office Blast Damages

Seoul: A court in Seoul has ruled that North Korea must compensate 44.6 billion won ( $32.5 million) for damaging an inter-Korean liaison office in 2020.
The Seoul Central District Court ordered Pyongyang to pay compensation to the South Korean government for destroying the Kaesong facility, which had functioned as a communication link between the two Koreas.
This ruling marks the first legal decision arising from a lawsuit directly brought by the South Korean government against North Korea. However, enforcing the payment is likely to be challenging, as Seoul lacks a practical means to force Pyongyang to comply.
On June 16, 2020, North Korea destroyed the building, as tensions between the two sides escalated and disagreements intensified over leaflets critical of Pyongyang being sent across the border.
The office established in 2018 as part of initiatives aimed at enhancing ties between North and South Korea.
