Thailand Offers IDs, Work Permits to Myanmar Refugees

Mae Sot: Thousands of Myanmar refugees living along Thailand's border are finding new hope as Thailand improves access to legal identification cards and legitimate work, lessening the threat of detention and exploitation.

The new regulations enable eligible refugees to get Thai-issued identification documents and work lawfully in approved areas, allowing many to earn a steady income and access essential services. For years, many displaced Myanmar nationals seemed without legal status, driving them into low-wage informal professions and living in continuous fear of imprisonment.

Rights groups supported the action, stating that legal recognition helps refugees to reconstruct their lives with dignity and minimising the risk of human trafficking and labour abuse. They nevertheless chose to stress that many refugees are still excluded from the programs and urged for greater protection and long-term solutions.

The proposal comes as the war in Myanmar continues to drive thousands of people across the border into Thailand, where humanitarian organisations believe the need for safety and legal options is critical.
