Pope Raises Concerns Over Algorithms Shaping Human Decisions

Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV has cautioned against increasing dependence on artificial intelligence and algorithms, asserting that automated systems must not displace human judgment and accountability.
In his May 2026 encyclical Magnifica Humanitas, the Pope warned that the convenience and rapid delivery of AI-generated answers might lead people to depend too heavily on pre-made information, possibly undermining creativity and personal judgment.
He also voiced concerns over algorithms driving decisions that impact people’s lives, cautioning that automated systems can amplify biases and generate new kinds of exclusion when human accountability is stripped from the process.
In a separate August address, Leo stated that algorithms decide who is visible and who is overlooked online, while digital platforms can influence public conversation with inadequate oversight. He advocated for enhanced oversight, greater transparency, and robust safeguards to ensure technology stays within human control.
