Berlin: German officials have arrested a 33 years old Ukrainian national on suspicion of spying at a defence firm in southern Germany, alleging that he gathered sensitive information for potential sabotage acts on behalf of a foreign intelligence service. The arrest is the latest in a string of spying investigations involving Germany's weapons sector.

According to federal authorities, the suspect was arrested on Sunday after being accused of acquiring information from the arms manufacturer's premises. Authorities believe he worked as a low-level agent for a foreign intelligence organization, but they haven't said which country is accused of leading the operation.

Prosecutors claimed the information gathered was meant for terrorist purposes. They did not identify the defence company involved or provide any other operational data, citing the ongoing inquiry.

Following Russia's complete invasion of Ukraine, Germany is concerned about sabotage and spying against its defence industry. In recent months, German authorities have increased counterintelligence measures, examining a number of suspected spying instances involving defence sites and military infrastructure.

Officials have not announced any charges beyond the espionage allegations, and the investigation is still in progress.
