Eleven people suffered mild to moderate asphyxiation on Monday following an ammonia gas leak at an industrial complex in Aqaba, Jordan, according to Nidal Al-Awran, Commissioner for Environment and Public Safety at the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority.

Civil Defense and security teams brought the leak under control shortly after the incident. A technical inspection was also carried out to address the issue, with authorities confirming that there was no further risk at the site.

Al-Awran said some of those affected received treatment at the complex’s clinic, while others were taken to hospital.

The leak occurred Monday afternoon during maintenance work on an old pump or pressure device. A pre-existing accumulation of ammonia gas reportedly led to a limited leak during the maintenance operation.
