Mount Semeru erupts three times, sending ash 1,000 metres into sky

Jakarta : Indonesia’s Mount Semeru erupted three times early Monday, sending ash up to 1,000 metres above its summit, authorities said.
The volcano, located between Lumajang and Malang regencies in East Java, remains at Level III, the second-highest alert in Indonesia’s four-tier warning system.
Ash columns reached about 500 metres, 800 metres and 1,000 metres above the summit during the eruptions, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency.
Semeru, at 3,676 metres, is the highest mountain on Java and one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes. Authorities are continuing to monitor its activity.
Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire and has more than 120 active volcanoes.
