US set to axe climate pollution limits for power plants: reports

Washington DC: The Trump administration is expected to remove climate pollution limits on coal and gas power plants on Monday, according to reports from US media outlets.

The anticipated move will dismantle key environmental regulations established during the previous presidential administration.

The expected policy change rolls back 2024 regulations introduced under former president Joe Biden. Those standards previously required coal and natural gas facilities to eliminate nearly all of their carbon emissions.

Environmental Protection Agency administrator Lee Zeldin is slated to announce the shift during a G20 energy ministers' meeting in Houston. Under the new guidelines, power plants will reportedly remain subject to specific controls on contaminants such as mercury and arsenic.

Coal represents the fuel source emitting the highest levels of greenhouse gases driving climate change. President Donald Trump has consistently questioned human-induced climate change, describing it as a ‘hoax’ while working to remove regulations that restrict fossil fuel usage.

The rollback follows the EPA's decision earlier this year to overturn its 2009 Endangerment Finding, which scientifically determined that greenhouse gases threaten public health and welfare.
