10-Year Sentence Upheld for Police Attack

The Court of Cassation has upheld a 10-year prison sentence against a man who struck a police officer with a car while attempting to escape arrest in a 2022 drug case, leaving the officer with a permanent 5% disability in his left leg. The incident began after an Anti-Narcotics Directorate captain obtained a Public Prosecution warrant to arrest the suspect and search his home following information that he possessed methamphetamine for trafficking and personal use.

When officers approached the suspect outside his home, he got into his brother’s car and suddenly reversed at high speed. He later turned the vehicle around and struck a first sergeant’s left leg before crashing into a police car and fleeing. The officer suffered fractures to both bones in his lower left leg and required surgery. During a second arrest attempt near a farm in Zinj, the suspect also tried to attack officers with a razor blade and punched the captain several times before being restrained and handcuffed.

The Public Prosecution charged him with assaulting three police officers while they were performing their duties under the law regulating narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. The High Criminal Court initially sentenced him to life imprisonment, but the High Court of Appeal reduced the punishment to 10 years. The Court of Cassation has now upheld the 10-year sentence.
