UN Chief Urges Renewed Commitment to Democracy

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for a renewed global commitment to democracy, warning that growing divisions, conflicts and declining trust are undermining the relationship between citizens and governments.

In a message marking the International Day of Democracy on September 15, Guterres said democracy extends beyond elections and depends on the protection of human rights, the rule of law and meaningful participation in civic and political life.

He said democracy is strengthened through dialogue, cooperation and efforts to understand different points of view, including those of civil society.

This year’s focus on deliberative democratic processes highlights the importance of bringing people from across society together to contribute to decision-making, strengthen trust and build more peaceful, inclusive and resilient communities, Guterres said.

Reflecting on his own experience of facing the challenges of restoring democracy in his country, the UN chief said democracy should never be taken for granted.

“Each time we choose dialogue over division, and cooperation over confrontation, we strengthen democracy,” he said.

Guterres urged people and governments to ensure that every voice is heard and that democratic systems deliver peace, dignity and inclusion for all societies.
