China Seeks DNA Samples to Identify Foreign Flood Victims

Beijing: China has informed foreign embassies about procedures for collecting DNA samples from relatives of foreign nationals missing after deadly floods and mudslides along the Nepal-Tibet border.
Chinese authorities are continuing search and identification operations in Xizang, with a hotline set up to assist families. Embassies will be notified promptly if foreign victims are recovered and identified.
On the Nepal side, 1,385 people have died and 5,130 remain missing, including 587 foreign tourists. Authorities have rescued 13,676 people, while 21,022 security personnel are involved in search and relief operations.
In Xizang, 43 people have died and 519 remain missing, including 261 foreigners. The disaster began on August 26 after a glacier on Mount Langtang Lirung fractured, triggering an ice-rock avalanche and massive debris flows that devastated areas on both sides of the border.
